Casa Mea renovated its attic into a study center. It contains a large classroom, 2 small classrooms, a small coffee break area, and 2 bathrooms. After the conversion, Erin, our USA volunteer, started the English school in the attic. She recruited local children and adults in addition to teaching our own children. Corrina, another volunteer from the USA, was our second English teacher. In addition, because they lived there, they acted as big sisters to the children. The school has also been used as a chess club for our children as well as the local children.
Casa Mea’s children have very special needs as a result of the years they have spent in an orphanage with little stimulation, poor nutrition, and little bonding. Our local school system cannot address our children’s special needs. Therefore, Casa Mea now has a school to address the needs of our children and others in our community who could benefit from such a program. It is our hope that by giving them special attention in a smaller classroom with special teachers and specialists, they will thrive and have a much better chance of becoming productive members of society when they are adults.
For a minimal tuition, Casa Mea's school provides enrichment classes not only for our children but local children and/or adults as well. Casa Mea has offered English, computer, and chess classes. Our plan is to use the small tuition from the school to create a self sustaining school. Through a local Romanian donation, Casa Mea now has musical instruments for the children. We are always in search of volunteer teachers for our enrichment courses!
